Passé composé

Introduction:
The passé composé is used to describe actions that happened in the past and are completed. Think of it like saying “I did”or “I have done” in English.

🔹 When to Use Passé Composé:

  1. Completed actions in the past

    • Example: Hier, j’ai regardé un film.
      (Yesterday, I watched a movie.)

  2. Actions with a clear beginning or end

    • Example: Il a commencé à pleuvoir à 8 heures.
(It started raining at 8 o’clock.)

  3. A series of completed events (narration)

    • Example: Je suis rentré, j’ai mangé et je me suis couché.
(I came home, ate, and went to bed.)

  4. Specific events that happened once (or a defined number of times)

    • Example: Elle a visité Paris trois fois.
      (She visited Paris three times.)

⚡ Pro Tip for Students:

If you can put the action on a timeline, and it has a clear start and finish, you’re likely in passé composé.
